Where Glutathione Actually Comes From — How it is Made for Supplements and Why the Form Matters

The Short Answer

• Supplement glutathione is not extracted from tissue. It is made by microbial fermentation.

Most people comparing glutathione supplements look at one number: milligrams.

It is the wrong number to lead with.

Glutathione is a fragile molecule. How it was made, how it is protected, and how much is still active by the time you swallow it will do more to determine what you actually get than the figure on the front of the bottle. None of that is printed on the label, which is exactly why it is worth understanding.

It Is Not Extracted From Tissue

This surprises people, so it is worth saying plainly: the glutathione in dietary supplements is not harvested from human or animal tissue. It is manufactured under controlled conditions, and the overwhelming majority of high-quality material is produced by microbial fermentation.

How Fermentation Works

The process runs much like brewing beer or making yogurt.

  • Harmless bacteria or yeast — often Saccharomyces cerevisiae, or specially selected strains — are grown in large stainless steel fermentation tanks.

  • They are fed sugars, minerals, vitamins, and nitrogen sources.

  • The microorganisms manufacture glutathione inside their own cells, as part of their natural antioxidant defense.

  • Once fermentation completes, the cells are harvested and broken open.

  • The glutathione is extracted, purified through filtration and chromatography, crystallized, dried, and tested.

Finished material is typically 98–99.5% pure reduced L-glutathione — the biologically active form.

Why the Molecule Needs Protecting

Glutathione oxidizes easily. Four things convert the active reduced form into the oxidized form:

  • Heat

  • Moisture

  • Oxygen

  • Light

It also begins breaking down early in digestion. That fragility is the entire reason delivery systems exist.

In a liposomal formulation:

  • Purified glutathione is combined with phospholipids — often sunflower-derived phosphatidylcholine — under controlled conditions.

  • The phospholipids self-assemble into microscopic spheres called liposomes.

  • Those spheres surround and shield the molecule.

  • Some formulations add microencapsulation on top of that, protecting it further through the stomach and improving shelf stability.

This is why you will see terms like:

  • Liposomal glutathione — protected inside lipid spheres.

  • Microencapsulated liposomal glutathione — a second protective layer added.

  • Delayed-release liposomal glutathione — timed to survive further into digestion.

Each describes another layer of protection before the molecule reaches the small intestine.

What the Research Actually Shows

Glutathione supplements have a long-standing credibility problem, and it is worth stating plainly.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled randomized, placebo-controlled trials of oral glutathione. Across the three studies that qualified, it found:

  • No statistically significant increase in red blood cell glutathione

  • No statistically significant increase in plasma glutathione

  • Differences that pointed in a positive direction, but not far enough past the margin of error to call a result

The authors noted that higher doses and longer durations may change the picture.

That is the honest baseline. Swallowing glutathione and having it arrive intact are two different things, and for ordinary oral forms the second one has never been firmly established.

Which is the entire reason liposomal delivery exists.

When researchers have tested protected formulations specifically, the results have looked different. A 2018 pilot study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition followed twelve healthy adults taking liposomal glutathione at 500 or 1,000 mg daily. By two weeks, researchers measured increases of up to:

  • 100% in immune cells

  • 40% in whole blood

  • 28% in plasma

  • 25% in red blood cells

Alongside changes in oxidative stress and immune markers:

  • 35% reduction in plasma 8-isoprostane

  • 20% improvement in the oxidized-to-reduced ratio

  • Natural killer cell activity up to 400%

  • Lymphocyte proliferation up to 60%

Those figures need their context attached:

  • Twelve people.

  • No control group.

  • Funded by the company that made the supplement being tested.

  • The authors described their own findings as preliminary and noted the sample size limited what could be concluded.

More recent work comparing liposomal to plain glutathione has reported meaningfully higher cellular uptake and longer plasma retention, which points the same direction.

None of this is settled. What it suggests is that the argument over whether glutathione supplements work may have been the wrong argument — and that the real variable was never the milligram number on the front of the bottle. It was whether the molecule survived the trip.

What Separates Good Raw Material From Ordinary

Manufacturers evaluating a supplier look at:

  • Purity, typically 98% or higher

  • Percentage remaining in the reduced, biologically active form

  • Heavy metal testing

  • Residual solvent testing

  • Microbial contamination testing

  • Stability against oxidation

  • Manufacturing under Good Manufacturing Practices

The One Question Most People Never Ask

There is a question inside that list that matters more than the rest.

Not where the glutathione came from. What percentage of it remains in the reduced, active form after manufacturing — and throughout the product’s shelf life.

A number on a label is not the same as a number in the bottle a year later. Delivery, packaging, and formulation are what close that gap. When a company can answer that question, it usually means someone was asking it during development.

The Takeaway

Milligrams tell you what went in. Everything else determines what is still there when it reaches you:

  • The fermentation

  • The purification

  • The liposome

  • The packaging

That is the part worth asking about, and the part most labels are quiet on.
